Sonia Meena, Addtl MD, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, has said that the new Chhatrasal Convention Centre at Khajuraho will add another aspect to the tourism profile of the world heritage city. She was speaking to ETTravelworld on the eve of dedicating the convention facility centre, built under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme of the Ministry of Tourism, Govt of India with funding from the state budget.
When asked about the issues of connectivity that Khajuraho suffers for a long time, Meena said that they feel that supply will get created automatically once there is steady demand for the destination. “It’s a chicken and egg story,” she said.
Agreeing that Khajuraho hasn’t been able to become part of any travel itineraries of tour operators because of the issues of connectivity, she said that the whole idea behind setting up a convention centre is to create an additional demand for MICE activities in the city.
Khajuraho is known for heritage, nature and wildlife because of its proximity to Panna National Park. Chhatrasal Convention Centre will add a MICE element to the city, she said.
When asked about the operations and management of the facility, Meena said that the Tourism Corporation will manage the facility for the time being and a decision on whether to involve a private player in the management and operations will be taken soon. After the Minto Hall, Chhatrasal Convention Centre will be the second facility under MPTDC.
MP Tourism along with India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) is organising a MICE B2B meet as part of the launch of the facility in Khajuraho. Around 100 MICE agents from across India are attending the event. “Through this marketing event we want the MICE industry to know about the facility and understand the opportunity for MICE in Khajuraho,” said Meena.
