Manoj Sinha, the Governor of the UT of Jammu & Kashmir, has said that the administration will unveil the new Film Tourism Policy for J&K in the next one week’s time. He said that the new Film Tourism Policy is designed to promote J&K as a preferred filming destination and make the UT regain its lost glory when it comes to film shooting. The Governor was speaking at a Tourism summit, Tapping the Tourism Potential of Kashmir: Another Day in Paradise, organised jointly by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, J&K Tourism, FICCI and India Golf Tourism Association (IGTA) in Srinagar. Governor Sinha said that while the films have brought into the forefront few destinations in Kashmir, which are still popular with tourists, there are thousands of unexplored destinations in J&K which needed to be developed and promoted. He said that the UT administration is preparing a plan to develop tourism infrastructure at all those places to bring them in the tourism map of the place.

Expressing his gratitude to the Central government for increasing tourism allocation by over INR 500 cr in the last budget to INR 786 cr, Sinha said that the government is committed to make tourism a tool for economic transformation for J&K by focusing mainly on five pillars like sustainable development, strong hospitality system, trained human resource, skill development, and infrastructure to experience culture and heritage in handicrafts, and cuisines.

The Governor advised the travel and tourism stakeholders to look beyond the “packaged” tours as today’s tourists look for memorable experiences by interacting with local people, understanding their culture, and J&K, because of its diverse offerings, is a place for “wholesome” experiences for visitors.

Despite the huge potential for tourism growth, J&K has not been able to to leverage that potential completely. He said that the efforts of the UT administration to open the state for tourism by enforcing health and safety protocols has paid dividends during the winter as tourists thronged the winter destinations in the state in huge numbers.

The Governor said that there have been efforts to improve connectivity with other cities as direct flights have already started between Bangalore and Ahmedabad. He said that the Srinagar airport, of late, has begun night landing facilities, too.
