State-of-the-art studios, hospitality accommodation and facilities for film tourism will be added to the Mumbai film city, which is expected to be completed by 2030, Managing Director of the Maharashtra Film Stage and Cultural Corporation, Avinash Dhakne, said.
A masterplan for the INR 5,000-crore project has been prepared to be executed under the PPP model. Dhakne was speaking at the ongoing Film Bazaar being held in Panaji on the sidelines of the International Film Festival of India (Iffi).
“In the existing film city, out of 521 acres we have hardly used around 68 acres. There is a lot of potential, therefore,” he said.
Dhakne said that the studios are 20-30-year-old and that now is the time to upgrade it with world class facilities.
“We have made a masterplan of the entire area wherein it is expected to bring everything under one roof. While the tourism part will be 25% with a separate area for tourist facilities, like food plazas, costume kiosks. etc, 75% will be totally dedicated to films with indoor shoot locations, newest technologies, hotels, screening areas and offices for filmmakers,” Dhakne said. The facilities will be open to regional film industries, the television industry and OTT platforms.
“The land will be provided by the government and private players will have to come with money and expertise in technology. Once they provide that, there will be concessional agreement so that maintenance is done by them,” he said.
Dhakne said that he intended for this vision to materialise by the end of the decade. “If we can complete tendering by June 2023, it will take another five years for the project to be completed. It must be done phase-wise because the current set up cannot be disturbed while the work is underway. We are certain that it will be completed before 2030,” he said.
