Tamil language and culture got a fillip in the state budget as the state government on Monday announced steps to promote sea cruises to connect places of significance in Tamil culture.

Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, in his budget speech, said, “With a view to celebrating the glory of Tamils who have conquered many lands overseas, efforts will be taken to promote and support sea cruises that will connect places of significancein Tamil culture.

These cruises will showcase the rich history, literature, art, culture, handicraftand cuisines of Tamil people, and will spread the state’s glory across the seven seas,” said PTR.

“We are yet to decide on the destinations, but they will mostly be the ones that have historical connections with Tamil Nadu,” said an official attached to the Tamil development department.

To highlight the contribution of the Cholas and to preserve artefacts and relics of that age, the state government would set up a grand Chola museum at Thanjavur, said PTR.

As part of promoting Tamilculture, the state government will set up 25 part time folk art training centres across the state “to preserve folk arts and to ensure that these traditions continue to flourish in the future,” the minister said.

To lend an impetus to growth of Tamil as a global language, an international conference on Tamil computing would be held with renowned experts from across the world. “This (conference) will greatly encourage development of software in Tamil language,” said PTR.
