Starting on July 1, 2023, international students holding a student visa will only be allowed to work a maximum of 48 hours per fortnight while studying. However, when their course or training is not in session, there will be no restrictions on their work hours. This modification in the working norms for student visa holders aims to prioritize their studies while allowing them to gain work experience simultaneously.

Indian students studying in Australian tertiary institutions can now work in Australia for up to eight years without requiring visa sponsorship. This is made possible by the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES), which has opened 3,000 spots, as agreed upon in a recent bilateral agreement between India and Australia.

Student visa work restrictions were relaxed throughout the Covid- 19 pandemic, and completely removed in January 2022. This allowed student visa holders to work over their normal limit of 40 hours per fortnight to address workforce shortages. This ended on June 30, 2023.

The Australian Government has announced that student visa holders already working in the aged care sector on 9 May 2023 can continue to work unrestricted hours in the aged care sector until December 31, 2023.

Australia has recently announced plans to revamp its immigration system in order to facilitate the entry of highly skilled professionals into the country and streamline the process of obtaining permanent residency. The government aims to expedite and simplify the visa application process for high-skilled workers, as well as implement measures to encourage international students to stay in Australia after completing their studies. Authorities said initiatives are expected to attract top talent to the country and boost its economy.

Last year in September, Australia increased its intake of permanent migrants to 195,000 for this fiscal year. This was a significant increase of 35,000 to support businesses that are struggling with staff shortages. The government has also promised to allocate more resources and funds to accelerate visa processing.

Wait time for first-time tourist visa interviews reduced, says US ambassador to India

United States Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, said on June 28: “We’re currently processing more visas, faster, than the US Mission in India ever has before. We have set a goal for ourselves to process at least a million visas in 2023, and we’re already more than halfway towards reaching that goal.”
