Plans are underway to beautify and turn Shanghumugham into a significant food street in the city. The area that can be spotted in shambles except for a few street vendors will soon be renovated to attract visitors.
The project is a collaboration between the state tourism department, Smart City and the district tourism promotion council. The entrance to Shanghumugham, the Kalmandapam and the Arattukulam, will be the main sections undergoing renovation.
“The objective is the beautification and rebranding of Shanghumugham. The idea is to facilitate the rehabilitation of roadside hawkers and food stalls by setting up appropriate kiosks complete with a waste management system, water treatment arrangements and food waste converter. The project is to be carried out by dividing the area into zone 1 and zone 2, the former being close to the entrance and the second, the path adjacent to the coffee house here,” said an official.
The project will not extend to the eroding beach area which continues to be the primary concern for residents and visitors alike. “Our understanding is that the irrigation department is planning to set up an offshore breakwater to control sea erosion. We currently cannot look at building structures close to the beach until such a development is made. After the breakwater is constructed, we can probably aim to erect a gabion wall stacking granite rocks to protect the area further,” the official added.
The estimate for the entire project, which is awaiting the final level of design approval, is about INR 4 crore.
The construction work is expected to start from August last week after the monsoon season.
