Mumbai‘s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) achieved remarkable growth in passenger traffic for the month of June 2023, indicating a robust recovery in the aviation industry. CSMIA surpassed its pre-Covid air traffic and passenger levels, experiencing a remarkable 107 per cent increase in passenger traffic compared to June 2019.
The month recorded approximately 4.19 million passengers, with arrivals and departures comprising 2.14 million and 2.04 million passengers, respectively. This data is a testament to the strong surge in travel demand as the industry is witnessing a growing number of passengers seeking travel opportunities.
In June 2023, CSMIA observed a 33 per cent increase in total passenger numbers compared to June 2022. Furthermore, the airport witnessed a 39 per cent growth in international passengers, with 1.1 million international passengers, compared to 0.8 million in the same period last year. The airport also observed a significant increase in Air Traffic Movements (ATMs), recording a total of 26,459 ATMs in June 2023 alone, further strengthening its position as a cornerstone of the aviation industry.
As for the top domestic travel destinations, Delhi emerged as the most popular destination with 499,916 passengers, followed by Bengaluru and Chennai. In terms of international travel, Dubai continued to be the top destination with 197,206 passengers, followed by London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi. The Middle East led the region-wise traffic share with 36 per cent, followed by Australia (22 per cent), Europe (18 per cent), and North America (16 per cent).
On June 10, 2023, CSMIA witnessed a significant surge in passenger movement, with the highest daily traffic recorded at 148,981 passengers. This includes 107,939 domestic passengers, while international travellers stood at 41,042. These figures showcase the airport’s strong performance and growth in passenger traffic, reaffirming its position as a leading airport in the region. Top Airlines serving the highest international passenger numbers were IndiGo, Air India, and Emirates.
Commenting on the Indian aviation industry’s monthly domestic passenger traffic, ratings agency ICRA said, the airlines’ capacity deployment in June 2023 was higher by one per cent than that of June 2022, but it was lower by 4.8 per cen in comparison to the pre-Covid levels (June 2019). It is estimated that the domestic aviation industry operated at a passenger load factor (PLF) of 93 per cent in June 2023, against 79 per cent in June 2022 and 89 per cent in June 2019 (pre-Covid levels).
