Sun Tourism picks up pace in Rajasthan; tourism dept to develop new locations, ET TravelWorld

A new trend is sweeping the tourism sector in Rajasthan as travellers across the country seek to immerse themselves in Sun Tourism. This practice involves witnessing the rising and setting suns, from the plains and the hills. With Mount Abu, the solitary hill station in the state, boasting a designated sunset viewing point, tourists are flocking to experience this celestial spectacle in great numbers.

According to Dalip Singh Rathore, Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, sun tourism has witnessed an upsurge of interest not only among foreign visitors but also resonates deeply with domestic tourists.

The Rajasthan Tourism Department is also proactively identifying and developing new sun tourism locations to attract a diverse range of global and local tourists to the state.

While Mount Abu remains a popular choice for sun tourism in Rajasthan, the forts and fortresses also play an instrumental role in fostering this trend, according to the tourism department.

Rathore recalls a scene from the movie “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” where the sunset view from Chittorgarh Fort captivated the protagonists, Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor. This moment, he claimed, has significantly contributed to promoting sun tourism, especially among the younger generation, who idolise their favorite film stars.

Notably, sun tourism has also become an integral component of pre-wedding shoots, owing to Rajasthan’s increasing popularity as a favoured wedding destination.

“With every district in the state graced with sun-kissed vantage points due to the presence of forts and fortresses, tourists can savor the magical charm of sunsets at multiple locations. From the iconic Mount Abu and Nahargarh near Jaipur to the splendid Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh, Sawai Madhopur, and the captivating Jaisalmer and Barmer, each destination offers travellers a surreal and mystical experience,” the department stated.

Developing tourist destinations as investment regions

The structural challenges of the past have resulted in India underperforming in tourism. To address this, we need to strategise tourist destinations as Investment Regions and collaborate with private Hoteliers, Travel Agencies, OTAs, and other relevant stakeholders. Instead of solely focusing on attracting a larger volume of tourists, we must implement targeted interventions aimed at maximising the value obtained from each visitor.

Mahendra Singh Rathore, a seasoned local tourism expert and guide, emphasises that the essence of Rajasthan lies in its majestic forts and havelis, which have become emblematic of sun tourism. Devi Pal Singh from Dera Ashwa, another tour planner, echoed the enthusiasm surrounding sun tourism. He said that the trend is not limited to hill stations and thereby, the concept of horse safaris at dawn is being introduced by his company. “These thrilling safaris allow travelers to experience the excitement of watching the sun rise amidst the enchanting sand dunes, making it an unforgettable experience,” he said.

With the prominence of sun tourism on the rise, the travel operators have a chance to tap into this enchanting new offering and cater to the ever-evolving preferences of their clients.
