A spike in tourist footfall in Madhya Pradesh in the rainy season has rebounded business for the tourism department anticipating around 10-12 per cent hike in revenue in the current financial year.
The influx of tourists at places like Pachmarhi, Mandu, Maheshwar, Ujjain, Omkareshwar and National Parks has swelled in the monsoon season especially on weekends and long holidays.
The religious circuit connecting Indore-Omkareshwar and Ujjain has seen a considerable increase in tourist footfall in the state, according to the tourism department and travel operators.
Between April 2023-mid of July 2023, the tourism department earned INR 60 crore from resort bookings and other activities, according to the official figures.
Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) MD Kaushlendra Vikram Singh said, “Tourist footfall has increased sharply this season and going ahead we anticipate a further surge in the tourist movement. Most tourist destinations get fully booked on weekends and on connecting holidays. We expect a jump of over 10 per cent in revenues this fiscal.”
Tourist influx from nearby states like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan has also increased in the state, according to the tourism department.
In the last financial year 2022/23, the tourism department had generated revenue of INR 220 crore. Singh said, “Madhya Pradesh has built its name and brand in tourism and is attracting tourists from across the country. We are also adding new facilities and activities at our properties to attract more tourists. The idea is to make such destinations where families would like to spend 2-3 days.”
As per the upgradation plan, the department is adding water and adventure activities at many locations while additional activities are being added at properties near water bodies.
The department is also mulling over upgrading swimming pools in resorts by adding slides and music among others.
