Stating that the government is committed to protecting heritage structures and promoting tourism in Mysuru, Karnataka tourism minister HK Patil on Monday disclosed plans to convert the 127-year-old heritage building which until recently housed various district offices, including the office of deputy commissioner, into a museum.
Patil told that many manuscripts, coins, and sculptures dating to the Chola dynasty, among others, are worth being displayed for public viewing. Unfortunately, they are kept inside at the Palace treasury.
After viewing them, we discussed about keeping them for public view. Whether to keep them on the display at the old DC office or to construct a new museum will be discussed, he said.
Single-ticket entry to tourist destinations
The minister also mentioned that the tourism department is contemplating introducing single-ticket entry to all tourism locations in and around Mysuru to facilitate tourists. This will help them to avoid queues at tourist places and people will also get priority for parking.
Patil said that the government would create a tourist police unit to attend to complaints of tourists during the Dasara celebration.
Regarding the proposed ropeway project atop Chamundi Hills, Patil said that there was no such proposal with the government.
Patil said the government would do all that was needed to develop Chamundi Hills. The renovated Wellington Lodge atop the hill is ready for inauguration.
The 2.5-acre land belonging to the tourism department would be used in the best possible way for the benefit of tourists.
Expressing unhappiness that the Karnataka Exhibition Authority was not utilising the 80-acre exhibition land to its full potential, Patil informed that a three-member committee headed by the Mysuru DC had been formed to submit a report to the state government on developing the exhibition ground.
He said that Lalitha Mahal Palace is not maintained well and it requires crores of rupees to restore the heritage structure. The matter would be discussed with CM Siddaramaiah, he added.
‘Dept to encourage nightlife in Mysuru’
Speaking on improving nightlife in Mysuru to attract tourists, Patil said the cityis known for its culture and tradition and the government is focused on developing on those lines. Patil also said that officials were also instructed to announce special packages for senior citizens and students to improve the footfall at Jungle Lodges and Resorts, which has done a total business of INR 111 crore from 2022-23 compared to Rs 61 crore in 2021-22.
