To make the city a hub of tourism in the region, the Chandigarh UT administration will develop theme-based circuits in and around Chandigarh.

The tourism department has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a private consultant, which gives handholding and helps develop the project.

The influx of tourists at places like Pachmarhi, Mandu, Maheshwar, Ujjain, Omkareshwar and National Parks has swelled in the monsoon season especially on weekends and long holidays. Between April 2023-mid of July 2023, the tourism department earned INR 60 crore from resort bookings and other activities, according to the official figures.

“The Centre under the Swadesh Darshan scheme (SDS) 2.0 has included the city in the destination-based tourism development scheme. The ministry has hired L&T as the project development and management company. The consultant will help the administration develop a plan of action for the theme-based circuit tourism, and then it will help in its implementation,” said an official.There will be destinations within the city, like the heritage circuit, which will showcase the architectural heritage of the city.

“We will also be developing the circuit having destinations in neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh,” said the official.
