Greenfield Intl Airport in Rajkot inaugurated; PM calls it a powerhouse, ET TravelWorld

On July 27, 2023, Rajkot celebrated a significant milestone with the inauguration of the state-of-the-art Rajkot International Airport, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the region for improved air connectivity.

The Greenfield airport developed at a cost of more than INR 1400 crores and spread over 2500 acres, boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure and adheres to sustainable practices. It will contribute not only towards development of the local automobile industry of Rajkot but will also encourage trade, tourism, education and industrial sectors throughout Gujarat.

Prime Minister Modi, who inaugurated the airport, highlighted the airport’s pivotal role in bolstering Rajkot’s status as an economic hub. He emphasised that beyond facilitating travel, the airport would be a boon for industries in the region, effectively becoming a powerhouse, igniting new energy and growth opportunities.

This ambitious initiative aims to construct Greenfield Airports, develop new terminals, bolster existing terminals, and strengthen runways, among other crucial projects. Notably, to meet the sustainable aviation goals, 55 airports, including 49 managed by AAI, have successfully transitioned to 100 per cent green energy, marking a significant achievement in the industry’s sustainable transformation.

The airport’s terminal building, GRIHA-4 compliant (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment), incorporates modern technology such as double-insulated roofing, skylights, LED lighting, and low heat gain glazing, making it an environmentally friendly facility.Rajkot’s vibrancy has inspired the design of the terminal of the airport and it will depict art forms from Lippan art to Dandiya dance through its dynamic external façade and interiors. According to the PMO, the Airport will be an epitome of the local architectural heritage and will reflect the cultural glory of art and dance forms of Kathiawar region of Gujarat.

On the sidelines of inaugurating other development projects worth INR 860 crores in Rajkot, Prime Minister also spoke about the advancements made in infrastructure, such as the significant expansion of the Metro Network, an increase in the number of airports and the growth of India‘s aviation sector.
