Australia to temporarily stop accepting TOEFL for visas, ET TravelWorld

TOEFL iBT, will be temporarily unavailable for visa purposes starting from 26 July 2023 until further notice, Australian Department of Home Affairs of announced. This pause comes as a result of revisions being made to the test by ETS.

Australian government is currently reviewing the changes made, the Department of Home Affairs notice further said. The updated version of TOEFL iBT was launched on July 25.

For now, the department will accept score from the following English proficiency test results.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), including One Skill Retake (OSR)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)
  • Cambridge English (CAE) (also known as C1 Advanced)
  • Occupational English Test (OET), noting this is a test developed for health professionals.

For those who have taken the TOEFL test for Australian visa purpose before July 25,their test result will remain valid.For Australian visa purposes, the Department will accept IELTS test results that include OSR, with the exception of applications for subclasses 476, 482, and 485, which need scores from a single sitting/attempt, the notification further said.

Last month, ETS, the organization that conducts TOEFL and GRE, announced a series of changes to optimize the test-taking experience for candidates. With the latest update, the TOEFL test will now take less than two hours to complete, rather than the previous three-hour duration.

Under the five-year agreement, BLS International will assume responsibility for managing and operating two state-of-the-art Visa Application Centers (VACs) strategically located in the cities of Douala and Yaounde. The Italian Embassy in Cameroon receives a substantial volume of visa applications, and BLS International will process an expected annual count of 16,000 applications.
