The inception report submitted by the project development and management consultants (PDMC) on Thursday posits development of tourism along four main themes in Chandigarh. Its architectural heritage, cultural vibrance, medical tourism and MICE (meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) will be leveraged to project it as a domestic and international tourist destination.

A presentation was also given by the L&T and PwC team on core concepts. The inception report will be followed by master plans for tourism and both hard and soft interventions.

The theme, “urban planning and experiential education” will highlight the unique architectural heritage and well-planned urban layout of Chandigarh as a major draw for architecture enthusiasts and urban design enthusiasts.

Launched by PM Modi on July 26, the state-of-the-art Convention Centre boasts multiple meeting rooms, lounges, auditoriums, and an amphitheater. Its multi-purpose hall and plenary hall can accommodate up to 7000 people, surpassing the seating capacity of the Sydney Opera House. This facility, named Bharat Mandapam, is developed at a cost of INR 2700 crore and will also be the host venue for G20 Summit in September.

The city’s cultural vibrancy, food and shopping experience and serene gardens will be showcased to promote Chandigarh as a destination with an amalgamation of diverse cultures and vibrant performing arts. “Local cuisine, shopping and markets and city’s abundant green spaces will be promoted, emphasizing Chandigarh’s reputation as a cultural hub and garden city,” states the report.Already a regional centre for healthcare, the city will be promoted for medical tourism across the country. Its potential to provide world-class medical services and attracting visitors interested in healthcare facilities from nearby regions will be tapped.

Promotion of the city for entertainment and MICE tourism has been emphasised in the Inception report. The consultants will evaluate Chandigarh as an entertainment and MICE destination and explore technology-driven experiences to enhance visitor engagement.
