A state-appointed 30-member panel, headed by Pune divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao, has submitted an INR 230 crore detailed project report (DPR) to the tourism and culture department for redevelopment of freedom fighter Shivram Hari Rajguru’s ancestral home in Rajgurunagar, about 45 km from here in Maharashtra, as a memorial.
Rajguru was an Indian revolutionary known for his involvement in the assassination of British police officer John Saunders. On March 23, 1931, he was hanged along with revolutionaries Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar.
The state archaeological department has so far preserved only the room where the martyr was born, while the work to conserve the place is yet to be started. Of the total plan, INR 94 crore is proposed to be spent on the archaeological work at the memorial, and the remaining amount for land acquisition, construction of amenities.
“The house is on 15 gunthas of land. As of now, we have possession of the structure. The rest of the land is with private parties. We will have to acquire it from them. The agency, which has prepared the DPR, has given estimates for the same. Also, we will have to carry out other necessary conservation work at the site,” said Vilas Wahane, assistant director of the state archaeological department. The state public work department will look after other allied projects, such as construction of a bridge on the road leading to the memorial and construction of an accommodation facility for visitors etc, said a Pune district collectorate officer. “The project also envisages landscaping on over one acre of land and sound and light show at the site. We are likely to get budgetary sanction for the project in phases. It was discussed among the committee members before it was sent to the government.”
Rajgurunagar resident Rajendra Sandhbhor said, “The government has already delayed the work. The authorities should work on it positively and release funds soon.”
