Principal secretary to the Tamil Nadu government (HR&CE, tourism, and culture) K Manivasan inspected the archaeological excavation activities underway in Porpanaikottai archaeological site in Pudukottai district on Friday. Further plans to excavate adjoining areas and the potential of finding unique antiques were explained by the archaeologists.
The state archaeology department said that the excavation works are progressing in 17 trenches. So far, 482 antiques including glass bangles, beads, golden nose stud and spindles have been excavated. Around 127 objects were unearthed within the last month.
“We explained that the site here is a unique excavation spot which may require further phases of excavation. There is a potential to continue the study,” T Thangadurai, director of the Porpanaikottai archaeological excavation told TOI.Brick structures found in Porpanaikottai were also explained to the officer. The brick structures have three different cores, and each core belongs to various timelines including the Sangam age and the Medieval period.
Several remains of an ancient fort and antiques were found over the years in Porpanaikottai village, prompting an archaeological excavation.
