Much before the winter season, Vanjangi in Paderu of ASR district in Andhra Pradesh has started to attract thousands of visitors from parts of state with its unique features. Not only the locals from Vizag, but even those from far-off places are making a beeline for this spot to witness clouds touching the hills.
Vanjangi hills are located around 3,400 feet above Mean Sea Level (MSL) and are home to one of the most beautiful sunrises (fluffy clouds kissing the peaks of the hills). The hill range was named after Vanjangi, a small tribal hamlet. It has become famous in parts of AP, Odisha, and Telangana.
Normally, the peak winter season is the best time to visit Vanjangi hills to witness the kissing clouds. But, this year, even before the onset of the winter, Vanjangi turned most beautiful with clouds touching the peaks in the early morning, said M Abhishek, a native of Paderu. Tourists from parts of Godavari region visited the hills on Sunday (October 1) and it seems that the inflow of tourists may touch an all-time high this year, he added.
The morning is cool and every sense is heightened as one witnesses the dreamlike cascade of clouds billowing like a river at Vanjangi, popular as Meghalakonda, said M Radha, a visitor.ASR district has a lot of tourist attractions such as Lammasingi (popular as Lambasingi), and Tajangi for its cool and foggy weather, and Araku and Ananthagiri for scenic beauties. But Vanjangi has been attracting more visitors (at least 5,000 to 6,000 people on weekends) than other places.
The forest department has planned eco-tourism projects at Vanjangi hills to attract more visitors and make the place the most popular in state. ITDA-Paderu has set up a gate to collect 50 per vehicle from the visitors.
Though Vanjangi has emerged as one of the major attractions in ASR district, the officials have failed to create basic facilities at the location, B Sateesh Kumar, a native of Kakinada, felt.
Meanwhile, locals have been appealing to the visitors to keep the hills clean by not littering.
