In 2023, the Gulmarg Gondola in Kashmir saw a remarkable surge in both revenue and tourist numbers. Over a million visitors, totaling 10,13,458 tourists, enjoyed the rides, contributing to the J&K Cable Car Corporation‘s revenue of more than INR 108 crore for the year.

This contrasts with the previous year’s figures of INR 91 crore revenue and 8.50 lakh tourist rides in 2022. As per the corporation’s update, the visitors praise the experience as surreal and captivating.The Gulmarg Gondola, managed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, stands as a pinnacle attraction for Kashmir tourism. As India’s premier ropeway, it operates at an impressive height of 14,000 ft, making it the highest operating cable car in Asia.

Alongside the boosted revenue and increased visitor count, the Corporation dedicated efforts to enhance service delivery. They revamped the ticket issuing system, conducted multiple safety tests, and upgraded the second phase of the Gondola with cutting-edge technology throughout the past year. This commitment to improvements likely contributed to the heightened satisfaction among tourists flocking to this iconic attraction.

“It was an amazing ride. The bookings were seamless,” said Akshay from London who is on vacation at Gulmarg these days. Another tourist couple Shubham and Ajat, who are visiting Gulmarg for the first time, were fascinated by the arrangements, warm welcome by locals and sanitation at both the phases of Gulmarg Gondola. The experiences were echoed by another family from Delhi as well as a tourist from Vietnam.

Jammu and Kashmir: Tourism triumphs in 2023

In 2023, Jammu and Kashmir became a global tourism hub, welcoming 2.02 crore tourists and over 50 thousand foreign visits. Focus was on various tourism offerings including MICE tourism with U/T hosting key events like the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting. Reminiscing the year that was for J&K Tourism, Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, Secretary Tourism & Culture, Govt of J&K, shares the key highlights with ETTravelWorld.

Managing Director, J&K Cable Car Corporation, Raja Yaqoob has appealed to tourists to avail the online mode of ticket selling for their convenience, time saving and curbing the chances of any black marketing by any tout. He said the Corporation is committed to improving the tourist experience by giving them easy, hassle free and safe rides.He assured of even better facilities in the days to come and appealed to tourists to adhere to timings mentioned in the ticket to avoid any inconvenience. He said tourist feedback is being taken seriously and necessary improvements in customer services are being made.

Notably, the Gulmarg Cable Car comprises two phases; one from Gulmarg resort to Kongdori valley and the second from Kongdori to Apharwath Peak.
