The state government will develop the Okhla Bird Sanctuary as an eco-tourism destination, said UP forest and environment minister Krishnapal Malik. The forest department will tie up with the tourism department to spread awareness about the different species of birds and hire bird experts to take visitors on guided tours.
The minister on Wednesday visited the bird sanctuary for the UP Nature and Bird Festival.
“If there are facilities for visitors, they, particularly children, can learn more about the wildlife. That might lead to an increase in the number of visitors. People need to develop a certain level of connection with nature and birds. So, we are trying to boost tourism and attract more people to the sanctuary,” said Malik.
The forest department has already installed an insect house for birds.
“The tour guides we plan to have will lead captivating bird-watching tours, providing visitors an opportunity to learn about the numerous bird species. The move will also generate employment for locals who know about the birds. One can learn unique things about a specific bird species, as well. I am sure people will love it,” said the minister. The minister also said environment conservation is among the top priorities of chief minister Yogi Adityanath and his government. He claimed the forest cover in UP has improved in the past several years.
“We will make all efforts for the bird sanctuary’s development. By organising the bird festival, the state government wants to spread a message on ensuring protection of birds, animals and their habitats,” said Pramod Srivastav, district forest officer, Gautam Budh Nagar.
