The bookings for chartered planes are done in advance and operators will be looking for maximum utilisation of aircraft.

The bookings for chartered planes are done in advance and operators will be looking for maximum utilisation of aircraft.

With politicians and political party representatives crisscrossing the country for the Lok Sabha polls, the demand for chartered planes and helicopters has jumped up to 40 per cent, and the operators are expected to net 15-20 per cent more earnings, according to industry experts. The hourly rates for chartered services have also spiked. The charge is about INR 4.5 -5.25 lakh for an aircraft and around INR 1.5- 1.7 lakh for a twin engine helicopter, they said.

While the demand has surged compared to the normal times and previous election years, there is lesser number of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters available. Some of the operators are looking to take planes and helicopters on wet lease.

“There is an increase in demand for helicopters and it is up to 25 per cent more in the election period compared to the normal period. The supply is less compared to the demand,” Rotary Wing Society of India (RWSI) President (Western Region) Captain Uday Gelli told PTI.

Generally, political parties use helicopters for their candidates and leaders to reach places in a shorter time, especially remote areas.

Gelli said the use of helicopters is being seen more in bigger states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Business Aircraft Operators Association (BAOA) Managing Director Captain R K Bali told PTI that the demand for chartered planes is 30-40 per cent higher compared to the previous general polls.

The bookings for chartered planes are done in advance and operators will be looking for maximum utilisation of aircraft.

“There is always a gap between supply and demand. Some entities are looking to wet lease planes and helicopters to meet the demand,” Bali said.

Helicopter use is charged on an hourly basis and the operators generally insist on booking by political parties for a specific number of days and a minimum number of flying hours every day during that period.

“Normally, the hourly rate for single engine helicopters is around INR 80,000 to 90,000 while it is about INR 1.5 to 1.7 lakh for twin engine helicopters. During election time, the rate is higher at up to INR 1.5 lakh for single engine helicopters and up to INR 3.5 lakh for twin engine helicopters,” Gelli said.

A single engine helicopter has a seating capacity for up to 7 people, including pilot while a twin engine helicopter can accommodate up to 12 people. For the chartered aircraft, the prices can vary between INR 4.5 lakh to INR 5.25 lakh per hour.

During election times, Bali said the earnings of the chartered plane operators are likely to be 15-20 per cent higher compared to the normal times.

Supply chain issue can cause surge in domestic airfares affecting travel demand

Travel demand is outpacing the seat capacities in airlines. Air travellers will need to either cancel or bear more than usual costs for air tickets. With many planes grounded due to technical difficulties or due to unavailability of required pilots there will be a surge in ticket costs affecting the travel demand.

As per the official data, there were 112 Non-Scheduled Operators (NSOPs) at the end of December 2023. Generally, NSOPs are entities that do not have a particular fixed schedule and fly when there is a requirement.

These operators have aircraft and helicopters, with seating capacities varying from 3 to 37. The planes include Falcon 2000, Bombardier Global 5000, Twin Otter DHC-6-300, Hawker Beechcraft, Gulfstream G-200 and Cessna Citation 560XL, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The ruling BJP incurred expenses totalling more than INR 250 crore on aircraft/ helicopters, as per the party’s annual audited accounts for 2019-20 submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The amount shelled out by the Congress party towards election travelling expenses in 2019-20 stood at over INR 126 crore. The party did not mention aircraft/helicopter expenses separately in its annual audited accounts for that financial year.

The seven-phase Lok Sabha polls will start on April 19 and it will spread over 44 days across 10.5 lakh polling booths. The elections will be held on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1. In 2019, Lok Sabha elections were held in April and May.

Air India and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) have joined forces in a landmark agreement aimed at transforming Bengaluru into a premier aviation hub for southern India, with an ambitious plan to enhance air travel connectivity in the region.

This collaboration between Air India, Tata Group airlines (AIX and Vistara), and BIAL is set to revolutionise the aviation landscape over the next five years. The key components of this strategic partnership include bolstering international connectivity, optimising operational efficiency, and elevating the passenger experience at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (KIAB or BLR airport).

One of the major highlights of this agreement is the establishment of a dedicated domestic lounge within T2 at BLR airport, catering exclusively to premium and frequent travellers of Tata Group airlines Air India and Vistara. The aim to develop this lounge is to provide more luxury and comfort for travellers passing through Bengaluru.

Moreover, Air India has inked a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Karnataka to develop comprehensive Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities at the Bengaluru airport.

This strategic move underscores Air India’s plans to strengthening its foothold in Bengaluru and expanding its global reach to meet the escalating demand for direct long-haul routes originating from Southern India.

The establishment of the MRO facilities is not just about enhancing Air India’s operations but also about driving economic growth in the region. This initiative is projected to create over 1,200 new job opportunities for highly skilled individuals, contributing significantly to the state’s employment landscape.

Malaysia Airlines & IndiGo sign MoU for proposed codeshare agreement

This strategic collaboration will see Malaysia Airlines leveraging IndiGo’s extensive network in India, enhancing its connectivity into the country. As the marketing carrier on IndiGo-operated flights, Malaysia Airlines aims to broaden its reach and offer customers seamless travel experiences. In return, IndiGo customers will gain access to a plethora of Southeast Asia destinations through Malaysia Airlines’ comprehensive network, facilitating easier travel planning and exploration.

Campbell Wilson, Managing Director and CEO, Air India, expressed enthusiasm about this partnership, highlighting the importance of airline-airport synergy in delivering an exceptional customer experience and ensuring operational efficiency. “Airline-airport synergy is key to elevated customer experience and efficient operations, while Bengaluru is highly attractive as an origin and destination market as well as a connecting hub. We are therefore delighted to be strengthening our relationship with BIAL with a view to developing a greater presence at the airport, expanding air connectivity as well as building a major MRO center. This partnership agreement is a significant milestone in the ongoing transformation of Air India,” he said.Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO, BIAL, echoed this sentiment, affirming BLR airport’s commitment to becoming the primary international gateway in Southern and Central India. “As the busiest airport in South India, BLR Airport is dedicated to strengthening its position as the primary international gateway in Southern and Central India. Given that over half of the international outbound travellers from Bengaluru and our catchment head to Europe, North America, Australia, and the Far East, our alliance with Air India represents a substantial leap towards this goal. We aim to capture a significant share of long-haul routes from BLR Airport over the next five years,” he added.

Mumbai, Two pilots’ groupings on Thursday said the problems raised by Vistara pilots are not isolated but indicative of systemic issues across Tata Group aviation entities. In a detailed letter to Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran, the Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPI) and the Indian Pilots’ Guild (IPG) urged the group to engage in a constructive dialogue with the pilot community.

Tata Group has four airline ventures — Air India, Air India Express, AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India), and Vistara.

IPG represents Air India pilots operating the airlines’ wide-body fleet while ICPA represents pilots operating the single aisle aircraft.

In recent days, Vistara has been forced to cancel more than 100 flights due to non-availability of pilots who are protesting against pay revision and other issues.

“The pilots of Vistara have been steadfast in their advocacy for fixed 70 hours compensation, improved working conditions, and stable roster.

“After thorough assessment and consultation, we firmly believe that their demands are not only reasonable but also reflective of broader challenges prevalent within Tata Group airlines,” the letter said.

According to the unions, the concerns expressed by the Vistara pilots are not isolated incidents but rather indicative of systemic issues that extend across various Tata Group aviation entities.

“The issues of 70 hours fixed remuneration, approval of leaves, adequate rest periods, unstable roster, stretching pilots to max flight duty, botched roster practices and an unsupportive work environment are consistently echoed by pilots across different Tata Group airlines,” they claimed.

India's civil aviation ministry, watchdog step in as Vistara cancellations surge

Vistara, owned by the Tata group and Singapore Airlines , cancelled over 50 flights on Monday, with around 160 delayed, news channel NDTV reported. It is likely to cancel up to 70 flights on Tuesday, according to local media reports. The airline operates more than 300 flights a day, according to its website.

The unions asked the Tata Group leadership to engage in constructive dialogue with the pilot community and take proactive measures to address their legitimate grievances. “By addressing the concerns raised by the Vistara pilots, Tata Group can demonstrate its commitment to fostering a culture of fairness, transparency and employee welfare across all its aviation ventures, which is missing at the moment,” the letter said.

In 2023-24, the turnover is expected to be around Rs 15,000 crore and the profit before tax at INR 5,000 crore, which will be the “highest ever in our history,” Kumar said.

Aviation authorities issue air travel alert for solar eclipse in April., ET TravelWorld https://travltalk.com/2024/03/30/aviation-authorities-issue-air-travel-alert-for-solar-eclipse-in-april-et-travelworld/ https://travltalk.com/2024/03/30/aviation-authorities-issue-air-travel-alert-for-solar-eclipse-in-april-et-travelworld/#respond Sat, 30 Mar 2024 10:30:00 +0000 http://travltalk.com/2024/03/30/aviation-authorities-issue-air-travel-alert-for-solar-eclipse-in-april-et-travelworld/ [ad_1]

As the Solar Eclipse, known as Surya Grahan, is set to occur on April 8, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a cautionary notice regarding air travel during this celestial event. The FAA, a US government civil aviation agency, has advised that aircraft should be prepared for possible delays, reroutes, and changes in departure schedules for all domestic IFR flights.

According to the FAA’s website, Traffic Management Initiatives may be implemented, and airports in the path of the upcoming Solar Eclipse are expected to be affected. The FAA emphasized the need for pilots and airports to make necessary arrangements and stay updated on any temporary flight restrictions that may be imposed.

The Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024, will be visible in several countries, including the United States, Mexico, and Canada. NASA confirmed that the eclipse will traverse North America, creating a spectacle for observers. As a result, air traffic is anticipated to intensify, particularly between Texas and New England, as enthusiasts prepare to witness this rare event.

US FAA to scrutinize United safety practices after Boeing issues

Boeing has been hit by a series of safety issues, including a near-catastrophic incident in January when a fuselage panel on a Boeing 737 MAX 9 Alaska Airlines jet blew off mid-flight. United — which owns the largest fleet of 737 MAX 9s, with 79 of the aircraft — has since reported poorly screwed bolts on cap doors and other parts of some of those planes.

The FAA has cautioned that air travel from 6 am EST on April 7 until midnight on April 10 could face disruptions due to increased traffic in states along the eclipse’s path of totality. The agency has recommended early planning and vigilance for both pilots and airports to mitigate potential challenges during this period. The Solar Eclipse is scheduled to begin at 2:12 pm on April 8 and end at 2:22 am on April 9, spanning approximately 12 hours. US states are gearing up for the surge of visitors expected to flock to witness the eclipse firsthand. To alleviate congestion at airports, the FAA has suggested coordinating early departures to facilitate aircraft staging.

China’s top airlines post fourth straight year of losses in 2023, ET TravelWorld https://travltalk.com/2024/03/28/chinas-top-airlines-post-fourth-straight-year-of-losses-in-2023-et-travelworld/ https://travltalk.com/2024/03/28/chinas-top-airlines-post-fourth-straight-year-of-losses-in-2023-et-travelworld/#respond Thu, 28 Mar 2024 16:03:00 +0000 https://travltalk.com/2024/03/28/chinas-top-airlines-post-fourth-straight-year-of-losses-in-2023-et-travelworld/ [ad_1]

China‘s top airlines have reported losses for a fourth consecutive year as weak domestic demand in the fourth quarter and a slow post-pandemic recovery in overseas travel weighed on earnings, but analysts said the outlook was improving this year.

Their performance, while better than in 2022, reflects how slowly the Chinese aviation industry is emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic, as international travel struggles to match a recovery in domestic travel and consumers remain price-sensitive amid the country’s slowing economy.

China lifted all pandemic-related international travel restrictions at the start of 2023, one of the last countries to do so. Data from the flight tracking app Flight Master showed in March the number of international flights to and from China was at about 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines on Thursday posted an annual loss of 8.2 billion yuan (USD 1.13 billion), compared with a record loss of 37.4 billion yuan in 2022.

The country’s flagship carrier Air China on Thursday reported a loss of 1.04 billion yuan in 2023, significantly narrower than its 2022 loss of 38.6 billion yuan.

In the fourth quarter, it posted a loss of 1.8 billion yuan, Reuters calculated, better than the 10.5 billion yuan loss in the same period of 2022.

Another major state-owned carrier, Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines, reported an annual loss of 4.1 billion yuan on Wednesday, far smaller than the loss of 32.7 billion yuan in 2022. Its fourth-quarter loss of 5.4 billion yuan compared to its 15.1 billion yuan loss for the period a year earlier, Reuters calculated.

Kenya Airways reports first operating profit in seven years

The airline, whose biggest shareholder is the Kenyan government, also said in a statement that its loss after tax had reduced to almost 23 billion shillings from more than 38 billion shillings the year before. Total revenue for the year surged by 53 per cent to 178 billion shillings, which the airline attributed mainly to a 35 per cent growth in passenger numbers to 5.04 million, according to its audited results statement.

China Southern attributed its annual loss to weak consumer spending power, jet fuel costs, supply chain problems and the depreciation of the yuan. Hopes are high the Chinese airline industry can turn a corner this year. Brokerage Guotai Junan Securities said on Monday that in January and February the percentage of seats filled by small airlines had surpassed 2019 levels while that of large carriers was also approaching pre-Covid levels.

China’s aviation regulator said in January it expected the number of international flights to and from the country to reach 6,000 per week by the end of this year, or about 80 per cent of pre-Covid levels.

In 2023, the global airline industry returned to profit on strong performances from carriers in North America, Europe and the Middle East. Airline industry group IATA expects the Asia-Pacific region to return to profit in 2024.

Just before the onset of the summer travel season, India and Thailand last week finalised an agreement that will allow airlines to deploy more flights between the two countries. The US aviation authority will scrutinize safety procedures at United Airlines after a spate of incidents on its Boeing-made planes, according to a letter sent to company employees.

The US Federal Aviation Administration is now set to take a closer look at the airline’s safety procedures, United’s vice president of corporate safety said in a letter to employees seen by AFP on Friday.

“Over the next several weeks, we will begin to see more of an FAA presence in our operation as they begin to review some of our work processes, manuals and facilities,” Sasha Johnson wrote in the memo.

“The number of safety-related events in recent weeks have rightfully caused us to pause and evaluate whether there is anything we can and should do differently,” Johnson added.

She said United needed to take an “even closer look at multiple areas of our operation to ensure we are doing all we can to promote and drive safety compliance”.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, “last year there were a number of close calls between planes on runways, and the industry is absorbing a massive influx of new employees hired”.

Airbus wins orders for 65 jets from two of Boeing's major Asian customers

Japan Airlines (JAL) said it would buy 21 wide-body A350-900 and 11 A321 neo narrow-body jets from Airbus, which will provide single-aisle jets to the long-time Boeing customer for the first time. Japan’s second-largest airline also said it would buy 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets. JAL has traditionally been a Boeing customer, although Airbus made its first sale to the airline in 2013 with A350 planes.

“United, which last year became the largest U.S. airline by traffic, has drawn attention following a range of problems on flights,” the business daily added. In late February, United Airlines pilots reported that the rudder pedals of the 737 MAX they were flying were stuck after landing in Newark, New Jersey.
