The registration for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage began on Monday with a large number of people turning up at designated bank branches here to secure a permit. The 52-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-meter-high cave shrine in south Kashmir is scheduled to start on June 29 and conclude on August 19, according to the announcement made by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

The journey can be undertaken through two routes — the traditional 48-km route through Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag and the 14-km shorter but steep Baltal route in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir.

“The advance registration has started today at bank branches here. The exercise is being conducted at 540 branches of PNB (Punjab National Bank) across the country,” an official involved in the registration process said.

It is Aadhaar authentication-based form generation for yatris rather than the manual procedure followed in 2022, the officials said, adding that forms will be system-generated now.

The designated PNB branch in Rehari opened this morning bedecked with flowers and bunting to welcome prospective Amarnath pilgrims, who were standing in queues since early morning for registration.

“We want to be part of the first batch of pilgrims undertaking the yatra to the cave shrine. We have been registered. It is a moment of happiness for us,” said Suman Devi of Janipur.

Religious tourism picks pace in Uttar Pradesh ahead of festival season

Preparations are in full swing to transform the inaugural Navratri festival at the Ayodhya temple, following the consecration of the Ram Lalla idol earlier this year, into a grand and momentous occasion. The event is expected to draw a significant influx of religious tourists from all corners of the country. Varanasi alone saw a record-breaking influx of 95.63 lakhs pilgrims in the month of March.

The schedule of the pilgrimage was decided at the meeting of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday. The yatra would commence simultaneously from both the routes, the officials said. The shrine board will also enable the live telecast of morning and evening “aarti” (prayers) for devotees across the globe.

A total of 542 bank branches across the country has been designated for the registration of pilgrims by the board, which is offering the facility also on its website.

According to the board, which manages the annual pilgrimage, no one below the age of 13 or above 75 years, and no woman with more than six weeks’ pregnancy shall be registered for the yatra.

The Greek government on Thursday offered compensation to tourists evacuated from wildfires on the holiday island of Rhodes last year so they can stay there again.

Tourists of any nationality “who stayed in hotels that were evacuated during the forest fires in Rhodes in July 2023, have the possibility to obtain financial assistance,” the tourism ministry said in a statement.

Visitors must register on a Rodos Week website set up by the ministry to obtain money towards six nights in an equivalent hotel to where they were in 2023.

Beneficiaries would get up to 300 euros ( USD 321) to stay in a double room in a three-star hotel, 50 euros ( USD 54) per night.

For a six-night stay in a family room in a five-star hotel, the compensation increases to 500 euros ( USD 535).

Tourists who stayed in rented apartments and houses are not entitled to the offer. And the trips are to be made before May 31 or between October 1 and November 15.

In July, at the height of a heatwave, about 20,000 people were evacuated from the island because of wildfires that authorities said ravaged almost 17,770 hectares (44,000 acres) in the south of Rhodes.

The German TUI Group and the British airline Jet2 flew empty planes to the island to evacuate affected tourists.

On Sunday, Greece raised its wildfire alert level to “high risk” after dozens of new blazes broke out.

Isreali : Galilee Tourism Industry reinvents itself as war enters sixth month

“The north is empty of visitors these days,” Safi Maklada, the Negev and Galilee Authority’s Druze and Circassian tourism coordinator, told The Press Service of Israel. “You won’t find anyone around except for the soldiers doing their duty, guarding the border and the communities, and their families dropping by for a visit.”

Like many other parts of the Mediterranean, Greece experienced a prolonged heat wave last summer in which 20 people died and close to 175,000 hectares (430,000 acres) of land were scorched.

South Korea to prepare measures to attract foreign tourists in H1, ET TravelWorld http://travltalk.com/2024/04/09/south-korea-to-prepare-measures-to-attract-foreign-tourists-in-h1-et-travelworld/ http://travltalk.com/2024/04/09/south-korea-to-prepare-measures-to-attract-foreign-tourists-in-h1-et-travelworld/#respond Tue, 09 Apr 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://travltalk.com/2024/04/09/south-korea-to-prepare-measures-to-attract-foreign-tourists-in-h1-et-travelworld/ [ad_1]

South Korea will prepare a policy package aimed at attracting foreign tourists in the first half of the year to boost domestic spending, Vice Finance Minister Kim Byeong-hwan said on Monday.

“The number of foreign tourists visiting South Korea have been growing and the government will prepare measures to ensure the trend continues as a driver of a recovery in domestic demand,” Kim said.

He noted that Seoul will host a K-beauty festival for a month in June, but did not elaborate on other policy measures.

In 2023, 11 million foreigners visited South Korea, up from 3.2 million in 2022 and 967,000 in 2021, according to the finance ministry, thanks to increases in the number of Chinese and Japanese tourists. That compares with the pre-pandemic level of 17.5 million in 2019.

Brazil hopes COP30 climate summit boosts ecotourism

Drawing more environmental and adventure travelers is part of the government’s plan to increase overall tourism in Brazil, which is low in comparison with other countries. Tourism contributes less than 8% of Brazil’s GDP, compared to more than 20% in Spain, Portugal or the Dominican Republic, he said. Sabino is working on expanding flights to Brazil and will be at the Seatrade Cruise Global fair in Miami next week to discuss increasing the number of cruise ship visits to Brazilian ports.

In Asia’s fourth-largest economy, consumer spending has been weakening due to interest rates staying at elevated levels for a prolonged period, raising concerns about the pace of economic recovery.

Assam’s Kaziranga National Park witnesses historic visitor influx in 2023-24, records 3.27 lakh tourists

Assam‘s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), which is known as the place with the highest population of one-horned rhinoceros, has experienced a fabulous hike in the number of visitors in 2023-2024.

According to forest officials, Kaziranga Park witnessed the arrival of more than 3.27 lakh tourists during this year, while around 3.15 lakh visited the park during the last financial year 2022-23.

Tourist flow is still continuing in the national park and visitors are happy with visiting the park, said the officials.

KNPTR comprises three administrative divisions, viz, the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, Bishwanath Wildlife Division and Nagaon Wildlife Division. Tourism in all three divisions have increased, indicating the popularity of non-conventional tourism sites.

According to the data, in 2022-23, a total of 3,10,458 visitors visited the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 2,610 visitors visited the Nagaon Wildlife Division, and 1,728 visitors visited the Bishwanath Wildlife Division.

In 2023-24, a total of 3,20,961 visitors visited the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 3,484 visitors visited the Nagaon Wildlife Division and 3,048 visitors visited the Bishwanath Wildlife Division.

The park, known for its beautiful landscapes, diverse wildlife, and iconic species, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The key attractions during the tourism season that re-opened post-monsoon in mid-October 2023 were the Jungle Safari and Elephant Safari options. Added opportunities for a cycling trail in Karbi-Anglong, trekking routes in the Panbari forest range and Chirang added to the attractions.

For nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike, Kaziranga offers a plethora of activities, from elephant safaris and jeep rides to birdwatching and nature walks.

New routes under boat safari for dolphin watching and the Panpur and Burachapori jeep and cycling safari circuits were also made operational this year.

Brazilian tourism officials are hoping to change the country’s image as a mere haven for scantily-clad beachgoers by hosting UN climate talks next year in the Amazon rainforest city of Belem that will focus on environmental sustainability and ending deforestation to slow global warming.

The summit is expected to boost Brazil‘s attractiveness as an ecotourism destination and increase travel to its Amazon rainforest and other biomes that offer the world’s greatest biodiversity, Tourism Minister Celso Sabino said.

Only 9% of current visitors to Brazil are ecotourists, while almost two out of every three tourists come for sun and beach, he said in an interview late on Tuesday.

“Tourism is essential for the sustainability and preservation of forests, bringing needed economic development for the local inhabitants,” he said.

Our mountains Are calling for help – Sustainable tourism in the age of convenience

To tackle the unsustainable aspects of tourism, all stakeholders in the ecosystem must collaborate. Travellers can adopt mindful consumption habits. Local authorities have the power to incentivise eco-friendly businesses, while tour operators can educate tourists on the environmental impact of travel choices. Creating comprehensive environmental planning and waste management for eco-sensitive tourist destinations goes beyond strategy.

All steps to raise foreign and domestic tourism are welcomed by private businesses complaining that the number of tourists remains stagnant and below the pre-pandemic level. “Brazil has a natural vocation for ecotourism given its unique biodiversity. There is an enormous potential to be tapped,” said Marina Figueiredo, executive president of Braztoa, the Brazilian tour operators association.

Tourists worldwide are looking for new experiences with nature and wildlife, Figueiredo told Reuters.

“COP30 next year will be more than just a conference. It is a very strategic event that will showcase Brazil as a country that protects the environment and preserves nature,” she said.

Pakistan-China border reopens for travel, trade after four months closure, ET TravelWorld http://travltalk.com/2024/04/02/pakistan-china-border-reopens-for-travel-trade-after-four-months-closure-et-travelworld/ http://travltalk.com/2024/04/02/pakistan-china-border-reopens-for-travel-trade-after-four-months-closure-et-travelworld/#respond Tue, 02 Apr 2024 08:00:00 +0000 https://travltalk.com/2024/04/02/pakistan-china-border-reopens-for-travel-trade-after-four-months-closure-et-travelworld/ [ad_1]

After a four-month closure due to severe winter conditions, the Pakistan-China Khunjarab border has reopened, facilitating commercial and tourist activities, The Nation reported.

According to the bilateral agreement, the border closure typically lasts from December 1 to March 31 each year, owing to cold weather and heavy snowfall.

According to The Nation, the reopening of this border crossing is expected to boost bilateral trade and tourism between the two nations.

While trade and tourism activities were halted during the closure period, transportation of essential goods for Pakistan‘s development projects continued uninterrupted across the border.

Notably, alongside the reopening of the Khunjerab border, transportation activities have resumed in the border areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, specifically Sost, and the Chinese city of Tashghargan, as per The Nation.

This development signals a renewed flow of commerce and connectivity between the two nations, promising economic benefits and strengthening ties.

Earlier, on November 12, the Chinese government announced the closure of Khunjerab Pass for four months in the winter, almost a month after it agreed to keep the high-altitude road open throughout the year, Dawn News reported.

Khunjerab Pass is the only place connecting two countries over this mountainous range, at a height of 16,200 ft. Khunjerab Pass is the point where the highest paved international road, the Karakorum Highway, enters China, connecting the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan.

Romania and Bulgaria partially join Europe's Schengen travel zone, but checks at land borders remain

The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, it was comprised of 23 of the 27 EU member countries, along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Around 3.5 million people cross an internal border each day. Austria vetoed Romania and Bulgaria’s admission into the Schengen zone at the end of 2022 but allowed Croatia full accession. Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007 and Croatia in 2013.

Khunjerab Pass connects Gilgit-Baltistan with China’s Xinjiang region and is the highest paved international border at 15,500 feet from sea level, under the border protocol agreement signed between the two countries in 1985, the pass remains open for travel and trade between April and November, Dawn News reported.

Thailand presses case for casinos to boost revenues, tourism and jobs, ET TravelWorld http://travltalk.com/2024/03/29/thailand-presses-case-for-casinos-to-boost-revenues-tourism-and-jobs-et-travelworld/ http://travltalk.com/2024/03/29/thailand-presses-case-for-casinos-to-boost-revenues-tourism-and-jobs-et-travelworld/#respond Fri, 29 Mar 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://travltalk.com/2024/03/29/thailand-presses-case-for-casinos-to-boost-revenues-tourism-and-jobs-et-travelworld/ [ad_1]

A bill that would legalise casinos in Thailand could be passed in the current government’s term, an official said on Friday, as the prime minister backed a move he said would create jobs and revenue and regulate a thriving illicit gaming sector.

Casinos are illegal in Thailand and the only gambling allowed is at state-controlled horse races and on the lottery. But illicit gambling, soccer betting, underground casinos and lotteries are rife.

Many in the gaming industry believe a legal casino market in Thailand would be a huge success in drawing more visitors to a country already a magnet for foreign tourists, providing strong competition for the world’s biggest gambling hub Macau, the only place in China where citizens can legally gamble in casinos.

“We have to admit that there is illegal gambling in the country, we are trying to get rid of (it) but it cannot be wiped out, so we have to rethink and see that it is time for this,” Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat told reporters, adding Singapore would be a model to emulate.

The issue has gained traction in recent days as parliament approved a plan to study the possibility of creating entertainment complexes that would house casinos, as well as other features like concert halls and venues for local sports like Muay Thai boxing, cockfights and horse racing, at which bets could be placed.

The plan did not specify how many such complexes would be created but it recommended they be located within 100 km (62 miles) of airports. Thailand is targeting a record 40 million foreign visitors this year.

Under the proposal, private companies would shoulder the cost of construction and operation while the government would be responsible for taxing and regulation, Sorawong Thienthong, vice chairman of the parliamentary committee, told Reuters.

CONSERVATIVE RESISTANCE

Legalisation of gambling has been discussed in the past but no government has gone ahead due to public opposition and resistance from conservatives in the predominantly Buddhist country.

In a 2021 opinion poll, 47 per cent of respondents opposed legalising gambling over concerns about crime and morality, while 21 per cent were supportive and 18 per cent were partially in agreement with the idea.

Advocates have said illicit gambling is already entrenched but poorly policed in Thailand and the country would benefit considerably from regulating it.

In Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar and the Philippines have legalised casinos. Huge complexes exist in border towns of Thailand’s immediate neighbours, catering overwhelmingly to Thai and Chinese customers, many on weekend junkets.

Travel frenzy: Indian travellers seize opportunity for extended break with Holi & Good Friday coincidence

Many travellers are taking three days off to extend the holiday to nine days, thanks to the unique opportunity of Holi and Good Friday falling in the same week. According to various travel agencies and online portals, there has been a huge surge in demand, with close to 350 per cent increase in both domestic and international travel for the extended Holi weekend compared to last year.

“We can regulate the grey economy and collect taxes,” Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on X social media.

“We do not want to promote gambling, but would rather supervise it and use the investment to create jobs.”

Disney, Florida settle state legal feud over Disney World district, ET TravelWorld http://travltalk.com/2024/03/28/disney-florida-settle-state-legal-feud-over-disney-world-district-et-travelworld/ http://travltalk.com/2024/03/28/disney-florida-settle-state-legal-feud-over-disney-world-district-et-travelworld/#respond Thu, 28 Mar 2024 12:29:12 +0000 https://travltalk.com/2024/03/28/disney-florida-settle-state-legal-feud-over-disney-world-district-et-travelworld/ [ad_1]

Walt Disney and allies of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reached a settlement on Wednesday to end a high-profile lawsuit in state court over control of the special district that includes the Walt Disney World theme parks.

Disney also agreed to drop a lawsuit over access to public records and defer briefings in a federal lawsuit it filed against DeSantis as the two sides try to reach a consensus on a new development agreement for Walt Disney World, among other matters.

“This agreement opens a new chapter of constructive engagement with the new leadership of the district,” Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle said.

DeSantis and Disney, one of Florida’s biggest employers, have been embroiled in a dispute since 2022, when former Disney CEO Bob Chapek criticized a state legislative effort to limit classroom discussion of sexuality and gender issues for younger students. Critics described it as the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

A Florida board appointed by DeSantis to oversee development around Disney’s theme parks sued the company to void “backroom deals” favorable to the entertainment conglomerate.

The clash was a centerpiece of DeSantis’ speeches last year as he sought the Republican nomination for U.S. president and bashed the company as “woke Disney.”

DeSantis later limited his public attacks on the company and dropped out of the presidential race in January.

Under the terms of the settlement announced on Wednesday, Disney agreed not to challenge the oversight board’s view that the land use plan adopted by the previous board, in the waning days of its oversight of Walt Disney World, is invalid.

That would leave a plan adopted in 2020 as the working blueprint for the Orlando theme parks and retail district.

Members of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District approved the settlement at a meeting on Wednesday.

The agreement was reached following the departures of board chairman Martin Garcia and the district’s administrator, Glen Gilzean.

“We’re eager to work with Disney and other businesses within Central Florida to make our destination known for world-class attractions and accountable governance,” Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Vice Chairman Charbel Barakat said on Wednesday.

The Florida legislature created the Reedy Creek Improvement District in 1967 to promote the development of Walt Disney World on 38.5-square miles of land.

SpiceJet resolves USD 90.8 million liabilities, gains full ownership of Q400 planes

The settlement, considered the largest in SpiceJet’s financial history, is expected to generate savings of USD 68.3 million (INR 567 Crore) for the airline, providing a substantial boost to its balance sheet and financial stability. A key aspect of the agreement involves SpiceJet acquiring complete ownership of 13 Q400 aircraft previously financed by EDC.

Disney paid taxes to that district, which provided municipal services and exempted it from some regulations.

The company’s shares were 0.4 per cent higher in afternoon trading.

The bench also pointed out “the contradiction in denying employment based on pregnancy” while also recognising maternity leave as a fundamental right

In response to the escalating traffic chaos in Nainital due to a surge in tourist numbers during weekends and holidays, the Uttarakhand high court has directed the district administration to devise a long-term solution for the issue.

Directing Haldwani district magistrate (DM) Vandana Singh and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prahlad Narayan Meena to present a status report and propose future strategies, the court scheduled the next hearing for April 2.

A division bench led by Chief Justice Ritu Bahri noted that the city grapples with an influx of over 2,000 light motor vehicles on weekends and holidays. Insufficient parking capacity exacerbates the issue, with the largest parking area, Flat Ground, accommodating a mere 250 vehicles.

The court said the DM and the SSP, with the assistance of the transport department, may allow tourist vehicles to enter Nainital via Haldwani and Bhowali and exit through Kaladungi Road on a trial basis. The court asked both officers to submit a status report and provide suggestions for planning. The court highlighted the absence of parking facilities in most hotels, forcing tourists to occupy roadside spaces, a primary cause of traffic congestion and inconvenience to both locals and visitors. The HC also expressed concerns over the air and noise pollution stemming from vehicular activities, which inconvenience residents and tourists alike.

Through events such as Sanya tourism promotion events, business visits, and discussions on air routes, a bridge for tourism cooperation and exchange between the two destinations was constructed, leveraging Singapore’s status as a global aviation hub. This initiative aims to narrate the story of “Beautiful Sanya” to the international market and expand Sanya’s overseas customer base.Singapore, being a vital aviation hub globally, serves as a crucial country along the “Maritime Silk Road” and a key inbound market for Sanya. Last December, the successful launch of the “Phnom Penh-Sanya-Singapore” route under the Hainan Free Trade Port established a direct link between two significant points in Southeast Asia. Starting from February this year, the mutual visa exemption between China and Singapore has greatly facilitated bilateral travel, opening doors for cooperation in tourism, education, technology, and more.

In January and February this year, overnight arrivals of Singaporean tourists in Sanya increased by 66 per cent compared to the same period last year. In the eyes of the Singaporean market, Sanya’s comfortable tropical climate, beautiful sunny beaches, diverse water activities, and cost-effective tourism products are highly appealing. Furthermore, Sanya has capitalized on Singapore’s global aviation hub and the visa-free entry policy for tourists from 59 countries under the Hainan Free Trade Port to establish closer ties with the international market in various aspects such as tourism consumption, trade, and cultural exchanges. This effort aims to create multi-destination travel products in Sanya, attracting international tourists from all continents and bringing new opportunities.

From the event onsite, the participating tourism-related enterprises from the Sanya Economic Circle cover various fields including hotel accommodation, transportation, high-end yachts, and wedding tourism. Sanya Tourism Board is dedicated to building a platform for friendly cooperation with foreign partners and deepening international cultural and tourism exchanges. Through closer connections with Singapore’s tourism industry, Sanya Tourism Board aims to reach more overseas target groups, convey the latest tourism product information from Sanya to the global market, and assist enterprises in the Sanya Economic Circle in better understanding the characteristics of target markets. They will optimize and upgrade tourism products accurately according to market demand to attract more overseas tourists to travel in Sanya. To facilitate consumption for inbound tourists and expand overseas customer markets, Hainan Province has launched the ” Hainan Safe Pay APP”, which focuses on addressing payment inconveniences faced by foreign nationals visiting China, allowing them to conduct traditional card payments without the need to download any additional software. Leveraging various channels and platforms, Sanya Tourism Board will vigorously promote this convenient payment method domestically and internationally. Additionally, consultation and complaint channels have been opened through the “VisitSanya” account on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to safeguard the consumer rights of overseas tourists and enhance their willingness to consume.
